Making Mobile Vet Visits Stress-Free: Tips for Preparing Your Pet

Mobile veterinary care offers convenience and personalized attention for your furry friends right in the comfort of your own home. However, preparing your pet for a mobile vet visit is essential to ensure a smooth and stress-free experience for both your pet and the veterinarian. In this blog post, we'll share practical advice on how to prepare your furry companion for their mobile vet appointment, from reducing anxiety to creating a comfortable space for the examination.

  1. Create a Calm Environment:

    • Choose a quiet and familiar area in your home where your pet feels comfortable and relaxed. We can work on the floor, a bed, even a cat tree or windowsill!

    • Minimize noise and distractions by turning off TVs, radios, and loud appliances. We will bring some calming music with us, but you are welcome to play your own.

    • Close doors and windows to reduce outside noises that might startle your pet.

  2. Familiarize Your Pet with the Veterinarian:

    • Introduce your pet to the veterinarian in a calm and positive manner before the appointment. Allow them to sniff and interact with the vet to build trust.

    • If your pet is anxious around strangers, consider using treats or toys to create positive associations with the veterinarian.

  3. Reduce Anxiety:

    • For pets prone to anxiety, consider using natural calming remedies such as pheromone diffusers, calming sprays, or calming treats. Consult your veterinarian for recommendations.

    • If your pet needs medications like Gabapentin or Trazodone before a visit, make sure you give them with plenty of time before the vet’s arrival - usually about 2 hours.

    • Practice handling and gentle restraint with your pet at home to help them feel more comfortable during the examination. We can show you some tips and tricks.

  4. Prepare Necessary Supplies:

    • Gather any medical records, vaccination history, and previous veterinary notes to provide to the mobile vet. Hopefully you have already sent these to us!

    • Have your pet's favorite treats or toys on hand to reward them for good behavior during the visit. Yummy teeny tiny snacks and lickmats work great!

    • Prepare a comfortable surface for the examination, such as a soft blanket or towel. We will bring some with us if you don’t have any :)

  5. Ensure Easy Access for the Veterinarian:

    • Clear a pathway for the veterinarian to access your home, removing any obstacles or hazards that may impede their arrival. Also try to restrict any escape routes your pet might take to get out of reach.

    • If your pet is anxious or aggressive towards strangers, please inform the veterinarian in advance so they can take necessary precautions. There is no judgements here!

By following these tips, you can help alleviate stress and anxiety for your pet during their mobile vet visit, ensuring a positive experience for both your furry friend, yourself and the veterinarian. Remember, a little preparation goes a long way in making veterinary care more accessible and comfortable for your beloved pet.
