Frequently asked questions.

  1. Does acupuncture hurt? Acupuncture needles are very thin and insertion is often painless or causes minimal discomfort. Sensations may vary from pet to pet, but many find acupuncture to be relaxing. Occasionally when needling a sensitive area or a trigger point there can be a reaction.

  2. What conditions can acupuncture treat? Acupuncture is commonly used for pain management, stress reduction, digestive issues, allergies, and more. You can see the blog for more information! Acupuncture and laser are great complimentary treatments for conventional medicines.

  3. How many sessions are needed?

While some pets experience improvement after just one session, others may require multiple sessions for significant and lasting effects. The number of sessions needed depends on various factors, including the condition being treated and individual response to treatment. We will discuss this with you at your appointment!

  4. Are there any side effects? While acupuncture is generally considered safe when performed by a trained practitioner, some individuals may experience minor side effects such as soreness, bruising, or temporary fatigue after treatment. Pets can also become very sleepy following the session, which can last up to 48hrs.

  5. How does acupuncture work? Modern research suggests that acupuncture may also affect neurotransmitters, hormones, and other physiological processes.

  6. Is acupuncture covered by insurance? Insurance coverage for acupuncture varies depending on the insurance provider and individual policy. It's advisable to check with your insurance provider to determine if acupuncture is covered! We can help you reach out to them. Also, Pawlicy.com can help you find the right coverage for you if you don’t have insurance!

  7. Can acupuncture be combined with other treatments? In many cases, acupuncture can complement other forms of treatment and may be integrated into a comprehensive wellness plan with your regular veterinarian. However, it's essential to inform all veterinarians involved about any acupuncture treatments and coordinate care accordingly.

  8. What should I expect during a treatment session?A typical acupuncture session involves a consultation with the acupuncturist to discuss health concerns, followed by the insertion of thin needles into specific acupoints on the body. The needles are typically left in place for a short duration while the individual rests comfortably. The session may also include additional techniques such as laser therapy, pemf therapy, or massage.

  9. How do I find a qualified acupuncturist? Finding a reputable and qualified veterinary acupuncturist is essential for safe and effective treatment. You can visit the AAVA website for more information. Only licensed veterinarians can practice acupuncture on animals.

  10. Are there any lifestyle changes or precautions to take before or after acupuncture?Depending on the condition being treated, we may recommend dietary changes, stress management techniques, exercises, or other lifestyle adjustments to support your pet’s overall health and well-being. It's essential to communicate openly about any concerns or questions regarding treatment.

  11. What is PEMF therapy and how does it work?

PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) therapy works by delivering electromagnetic pulses to targeted areas of the body, which can penetrate deep into tissues. These electromagnetic pulses induce electrical changes at the cellular level, influencing cellular signaling pathways and promoting various physiological responses. PEMF therapy has been shown to stimulate the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the energy currency of cells, leading to increased cellular metabolism and regeneration. Additionally, PEMF therapy can modulate inflammation, reduce oxidative stress, and enhance blood circulation, thereby facilitating tissue repair and accelerating the healing process. By addressing underlying cellular mechanisms, PEMF therapy offers a non-invasive and drug-free approach to pain relief and healing, making it suitable for a wide range of acute and chronic conditions, including musculoskeletal injuries, arthritis, and wound healing.

  12. What is Laser or photo-bio-modulation therapy and how does it work?

Laser therapy, also known as photo-bio-modulation, utilizes specific wavelengths of very bright light to stimulate cell processes and promote healing and pain relief. When applied to the affected area, the photons emitted by the light penetrate deep into tissues, where they are absorbed by cellular components such as mitochondria. This absorption triggers biochemical reactions that increase cellular energy production (ATP; inside the mitochondria the powerhouse of the cell!!), enhance tissue oxygenation, and promote the release of anti-inflammatory mediators. Additionally, laser therapy has been shown to stimulate collagen synthesis, accelerate tissue repair, and modulate nerve activity, leading to reduced pain sensation. By harnessing the power of light energy, laser therapy offers a non-invasive and drug-free approach to managing pain and facilitating tissue healing across various conditions, including musculoskeletal injuries, neuropathy, and inflammatory disorders.
